Why are African-American students choosing to academically disengage?
“Those who use oppositional cultural strategies are trying to be black by rejecting what is perceived to be white or European. The oppositional cultural strategy gives the illusion of taking control. However, to be not white, one’s first reference point is white. Given that most African-Americans have developed their cultural meaning in social contexts dominated by racist images and myths, many African-Americans who use oppositional cultural strategies have false beliefs of white supremacy and black possibilities. Thus, by rejecting what is perceived to be white, one is left with inferior characteristics and a pathological lifestyle.”
